Paris Flea Market – Keys

While in Paris last month (okay, I promise I won’t start EVERY post like this!), but yes, while in Paris last month, my girlfriends and I headed to the most amazing flea market. There were so many vintage items there, it was the most dazzling eye candy! Sadly, many vendors had signs posted saying “NO PHOTOS”, so I respected their wishes and did not photograph their goods. But there were others who were more lenient, and I was thankful for the opportunity to capture these goodies!

There was one vendor in particular who had beautiful chandeliers, and when I asked if I could photograph a candelabra and mirror set, she politely said no and explained that it was an original from one of the King Louis’ reigns and the fear of replicating is why many of the vendors do not allow photos. Totally understandable, and more reason I love the images I was able to get before we headed off to the most amazing (local) restaurant in the market.

The vintage keys above captured my attention the minute we walked into the open market. The rusted one in particular, really called out to me! Because of that, I adjusted my focal point by selecting one off center, towards the left, towards the top. And I knew I wanted a shallow depth of field, to really draw the eye to the little rusty guy, so I opened up my aperture and grabbed this shot. I must admit, it’s my favorite from the outing!

I also loved the selection of old newspapers and books. Vintage Elle?! I couldn’t live without Elle in my 20’s : ) The one below is from 1899…

Can you imagine wearing those fashions? They really didn’t believe in showing ANY skin, did they? Maybe this will be the popular fashion once my little girls are teens : )

Paris Flea Market – fashion bodice

My brother’s girlfriend is a fashion designer. So this vintage bodice definitely made me think of her. Right after I snapped this, a vendor pointed out the “NO PHOTOS” sign, so I apologized and didn’t grab any other shots.

Paris Flea Market – Dress

For some reason this dress made me think of her again. Maybe it was the colors? The beading? The feathers? Maybe I was a little homesick…

Paris Flea Market – Lantern

I loved the detailing in this lantern. Notice the little lion heads? We certainly won’t find that in Ikea!

Paris Flea Market – Lubitel 166 Camera

And although this Lubitel 166 isn’t super ancient, it did make me think of how different it is approaching photography in our current times with all the advancements we have digitally. Thinking back to shooting with film, I know I didn’t take as many shots as I do now, because of all the film and developing costs. Makes me love my 60D that much more!

Thanks for stopping by and have a joyful, creative, blessing filled day!
Live creatively!

PS. The new photo challenge I referred to in the title of this post is A Word A Week, where the the blogger randomly opens up the dictionary and whatever word she lands on is the word for the weekly challenge. As a newer blogger, I’ve followed a few of her posts and decided to jump in this week with these old, vintage finds at the flea market. Check out the images on her site. They’re quite lovely! And if you’re inspired, jump in the challenge as well!

  1. That’s such an amazing post. I felt as though I was walking along with you guys at the flea market. Man, what I wouldn’t give to tour a flea market in Paris for an afternoon.

Terrific photos and a great story to go along with it.

  2. Some of us are much into ‘vintage’ …..for some unknown reason, it gives such a nice-feel, I love it and do live in the ‘past’ …belong to a vintageHeritage film club here in Chennai, where we have a monthly screening of a Tamil film made between 1930-1960 🙂
Loved looking through the above – thanks !

      • oh yes, we look forward to that one day in a month. As you might know the Indian films have always been musical, all of them and that’s an added attraction as we’re crazy about old time film songs. Not sure if you had a look at the following 2 topics in my blog – ‘vintage film dancers’ and ‘srirangamNvintage cinema’ 🙂

  3. What a fantastic group of photos! That flea market would have had my trigger finger itching constantly, too! I hate it when vendors in shops and markets don’t let you take photos and I admit to sometimes taking stealth shots from the hip. Sometimes they come out pretty good considering the odd angle and sometimes they are crap. Serves me right! 😉
