We just finished tackling the most challenging exercises I’ve been faced with in the Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at CY365… Street Photography! I love photographing at farmer’s market’s and street fairs, so I thought the four exercises in Street Photography would be a breeze. Boy, was I wrong!
As challenging (in a good way, of course!) as the assignments were, I definitely enjoyed pushing beyond my comfort zone. I really hoped to nail the street portrait and was channeling my “Humans of New York” inspiration as much as possible, but let’s just say I’ll leave that niche of photography to the street photography pros like Brandon Stanton 🙂
Do you enjoy street photography? Any tips you’d like to share that help you when capturing a good street portrait? I learned lots and would like to share my takeaway from the pedi-cab shots…
Photo Tip: Engage with your subject – chat with them, give a little direction and be grateful for their assistance! Even if there’s a language barrier, use body language and your hands to drive the communication! {click to tweet!}
Today just happens to be our 10 on 10 posting for the month, so what a great opportunity to share these street photos from my outing in Little Italy and the Embarcadero! You may have come to me from Megan Wright as part of the 10 on 10 circle, but even if you didn’t come from Megan’s blog, follow the circle and head on over to Kristina Rust – her images are always gorgeous and inspiring, and her blog is full of great photo tips!
And if you still didn’t get enough 10 on 10 goodness, check out our previous circles here – I love the beautiful, diverse and collaborative spirit of our photo circles!
As always, thanks for stopping by. Have a joyful, creative, blessing filled day! Make sure not to miss any future posts by signing up for the Clicky Chick Creates email list!
Live creatively!

Thanks Kristina! Little Italy isn’t far from the airport, and luckily that town car pulled up at just the right time! I had just photographed the valet and was facing south for the shot, then turned to leave and was facing north when I saw the mustache and plane. With that said, I wonder if it would be easier / smarter to shoot in a mode other than manual? Just a thought for you to consider as the mustache shot is a tad blown out 🙂 Love sharing behind-the-shutter kinda tips!

Connie, I love these! You did a great job – so much so, that I’m inspired to get out and about for next month’s post. The signs, the colors and the people express the joy of your day. Fantastic!

Your welcome. It looks difficult. How do you choose what to shoot?

Part of my subject choices were based on the “Practice” assignment from Katrina’s class. Part of it was what caught my eye. For example, I knew I needed to get a portrait for the assignment, so when I saw the “lot full” sign at the hotel, I approached the valets and asked if one would pose next to it for me, and give me some “that’s right folks, lot is full” type of attitude. Just after I said thanks to the valet and started to walk away, I saw the pink mustache town car and knew I had to get the shot there too, just because it was such an odd sight! I’m continuously taking photography classes, so that helps guide me, and being behind the lens as much as possible helps so I’m fiddling less and focusing on composition more 🙂
