We just finished tackling the most challenging exercises I’ve been faced with in the Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at CY365… Street Photography! I love photographing at farmer’s market’s and street fairs, so I thought the four exercises in Street Photography would be a breeze. Boy, was I wrong!

As challenging (in a good way, of course!) as the assignments were, I definitely enjoyed pushing beyond my comfort zone. I really hoped to nail the street portrait and was channeling my “Humans of New York” inspiration as much as possible, but let’s just say I’ll leave that niche of photography to the street photography pros like Brandon Stanton 🙂

  5. You did an awesome job! Love the pink mustache but also the plane flying overhead..great capture! Street Photography is definitely something I want to work on, so thank you for the tips!

    • Thanks Kristina! Little Italy isn’t far from the airport, and luckily that town car pulled up at just the right time! I had just photographed the valet and was facing south for the shot, then turned to leave and was facing north when I saw the mustache and plane. With that said, I wonder if it would be easier / smarter to shoot in a mode other than manual? Just a thought for you to consider as the mustache shot is a tad blown out 🙂 Love sharing behind-the-shutter kinda tips!

      • Part of my subject choices were based on the “Practice” assignment from Katrina’s class. Part of it was what caught my eye. For example, I knew I needed to get a portrait for the assignment, so when I saw the “lot full” sign at the hotel, I approached the valets and asked if one would pose next to it for me, and give me some “that’s right folks, lot is full” type of attitude. Just after I said thanks to the valet and started to walk away, I saw the pink mustache town car and knew I had to get the shot there too, just because it was such an odd sight! I’m continuously taking photography classes, so that helps guide me, and being behind the lens as much as possible helps so I’m fiddling less and focusing on composition more 🙂
