Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make it Monday blog circle in greenWelcome to the Make It Monday, Easter edition! I hope you’re ready to be inspired to get Easter in full swing! I know, we just got done with St. Patrick’s day last week and here we are ready to hop into Easter {see what I did there? uh-huh! ;) } Let’s get hopping!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com //Easter shaker card, blessed Easter, DIY, video, tutorial, easy, shaker, card, Easter Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com //Easter shaker card, blessed Easter, DIY, video, tutorial, easy, shaker, card, Easter Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com //Easter shaker card, blessed Easter, DIY, video, tutorial, easy, shaker, card, Easter

You won’t believe where I found the inspiration for these cards… emptied out egg shells we filled with confetti and smashed on each other when I was a kid! I’m not sure if that was a 1970’s thing or a Mexican thing, but we did it every Easter! Thinking of those Easter’s spent with my family, particularly my cousins, at a park not far from our grandparents homes, filled me with nostalgia and fun memories! The memory of the confetti filled eggs made me want to recreate a modern version in a card!

I ended up making 4 of the cards, and even share how I made them in the video below. I hope you enjoy the video and learn a few tips and tricks!

PS. The Pinterest Inspiration challenge over at Simon Says Stamp provided great inspiration for this post, too! The chocolate confetti cake reminds me so much of those confetti eggs from my childhood!

Vintage Beauty {Feeling Crafty}

Product choices can help make our layout choices so much easier! I loved these photos of my baby girl and the vibe they gave with her dress and the retro kitchen. Digging through my stash, I found some old Teresa Collins journaling cards on a 12×12 sheet and loved the design. I wanted to mimic the feel of it, so I cut out a similar shape on pink cardstock using my Slice e-cutter, then heat embossed the edge of it with black embossing powder for the close-up photo.

Using a punch on the edge for the bigger frame, I used the same heat embossing technique to create a custom look on the frame. Neither frame is “perfect” but it looks very vintage which works for this layout!

Adding details in similar colors and to support the vintage vibe just pulls it all together, even though all the pieces are from separate collections, spanning at least 5 years! I don’t make a lot of my own kits, but this layout inspires me to do that and create custom kits to meet my eclectic needs! How about you? Do you use kits? Do you create your own kits? I’d love to hear your insights and tips!

The photos were taken at a friend’s birthday party, but wouldn’t that be an adorable kitchen to use as a photo prop in a studio?! I totally loved it!

One of the ways I’ve developed my own style and feel quite comfortable creating layouts is from the assortment of classes I’ve taken. From photography to scrapbooking, mixed media to stamping… they’ve all influenced my style and helped me develop my own voice! So, I HAVE to tell you about a fantastic event coming up next weekend. Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make it Monday blog circle in greenWelcome to another Make It Monday circle! I’m so excited to share these cupcake toppers I recently made for the Father-Daughter Dance “Mustache and Tiara Ball II” at my girls’ school! It’s an annual event and I LOVE that my girls and hubby enjoy their big night out, getting dressed up, going out to a nice dinner, and overall having a ball!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // PRINTABLES on Etsy, mustache, tiara, cupcake toppers, easy, simple, DIY, father-daughter dance, ball, party

My baby is in kindergarten this year, so she was thrilled to get to go too. My 2nd grader wasn’t thrilled to have sis in tow as it’s she had 3 years of going solo with her Daddy! Ah, sister drama! But I digress… I had a blast making these cupcake toppers for the big night. Our school is definitely full of loving parents who volunteer their time and talents (along with their treasures!) to the school, and these toppers were going to be paired with yummy cupcakes prepared by other mommies!

Did you notice the “II” after “Mustache and Tiara Ball” earlier? Yes, this was the second year we’ve had this theme, so I actually made similar toppers last year. And I realized, I’m probably not alone needing toppers for this theme! So, what’s a girl to do? I added these printables to my Etsy shop! All that’s need after printing up the sheets, is a few different punches to create these perfectly adorable toppers!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // PRINTABLES on Etsy, mustache, tiara, cupcake toppers, easy, simple, DIY, father-daughter dance, ball, party Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // PRINTABLES on Etsy, mustache, tiara, cupcake toppers, easy, simple, DIY, father-daughter dance, ball, party

You can purchase the instant downloads from my Etsy shop – the MUSTACHES alone, the TIARAS alone, or a COMBO of both mustaches and tiaras!

They were super easy to make with the printable, a handful of punches and of course glitter! Once they were punched and glued onto bamboo forks and lollipop sticks, I added a touch of glitter to really make them look like a million bucks! I ended up volunteering the night of the party taking candid photos, and I was so happy to see lots of little girls who had devoured their cupcake treats, but were still holding onto the toppers! So cute!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make it Monday blog circle in greenI hope you’re inspired to make some toppers for your next party! But until you’re ready to get into party planning mode, continue our Make It Monday circle and head on over to the uber talented and creative Melissa Shanhun at Digital Scrapbooking HQ. Before you delete those toddler selfies, see how Melissa told the story of a day through her adorable and precocious daughter Emily’s photos! 10 on 10 – March // Blissful and Serene

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // calm, serene, blissful, photos at church, statue, details

Can you believe it’s already time for another 10 on 10 post?! One of my favorite sayings regarding parenting is “the days are long but the years are short” – and it totally applies to this monthly photo project – the months just whizz by!

I recently posted this photo {available in my Society 6 shop} from my morning visit to my church.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Open Door quote - Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls

Being at my church is one of my favorite places to be. The community, the clergy and staff, the friendships, the beauty of the grounds…it’s all truly blissful! The design and architecture that went into it is gorgeous and always makes me want to linger. And heading over mid-week with my camera allows me the opportunity to savor every bit and piece of it! I said it once and I’ll say it again…It’s amazing what you can find around you when your heart finds bliss, your mind is clear, and you have the serenity of a quiet church!

I hope you see the beauty I see and feel the calmness I feel. Enjoy!

Wall // She’s Tough {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // child kid photography, locations, unexpected, wall

My community is really quite lovely. It’s in San Diego, California, and it’s a suburb with a “country living” vibe. It’s a great community, and even though it’s rather large (we have 4 public elementary schools, with about 600 – 800 in each school!), it has a very close, small town feel. Sometimes friends refer to it as living in the bubble. Some call it Mayberry. It’s easy to stay in our neighborhood for weeks on end and suddenly realize you’ve been in the bubble a little too long!

There are times when a photo vision comes to mind. Sometimes inspiration hits for a very specific look, with a distinct feel. That’s exactly what happened, but finding an urban vibe in the bubble can be a bit challenging! So while my little one and I were at one of our many local parks, I noticed the texture on this wall. I knew I had to incorporate it into my shot and fulfill my urban vision!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // child kid photography, locations, unexpected, wall

Getting out of the bubble just isn’t in the cards sometimes with school schedules, volunteer commitments, work obligations, playdates, family, etc., so making do with what we have around us is essential. Last weekend I taught my first live online photography class: “Location, location, location!” It was such a blast! I’m on the Creative Team at Capture Your 365 and we were celebrating our 4th birthday with a day full of live photography lessons, photo critiques, photo scavenger hunt, and more! We had lots to celebrate and an online web room full of photographers of all levels from around the world to celebrate with! Can you imagine the all the daily photo prompts that have gone into 4 years? Pretty amazing, and still going strong!

My “location, location, location” segment was wonderfully received, so I’m now working on turning it into an e-book. Pretty exciting stuff and more to come on that subject soon!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // child kid photography, locations, unexpected, wall

One of the examples I shared was the photo of my baby girl in all her toughness (and cuteness!) against the wall. Want to know a secret? That wall? It’s the wall of the bathrooms at the park! Yes, that gritty, urban wall… the entrance to the park bathroom! In my e-book, I’ll share my tips and tricks on spotting locations that you wouldn’t necessarily think to use for backgrounds in your photos, transporting your viewer to a destination other than reality, incorporating surroundings in unexpected ways!
