My community is really quite lovely. It’s in San Diego, California, and it’s a suburb with a “country living” vibe. It’s a great community, and even though it’s rather large (we have 4 public elementary schools, with about 600 – 800 in each school!), it has a very close, small town feel. Sometimes friends refer to it as living in the bubble. Some call it Mayberry. It’s easy to stay in our neighborhood for weeks on end and suddenly realize you’ve been in the bubble a little too long!

There are times when a photo vision comes to mind. Sometimes inspiration hits for a very specific look, with a distinct feel. That’s exactly what happened, but finding an urban vibe in the bubble can be a bit challenging! So while my little one and I were at one of our many local parks, I noticed the texture on this wall. I knew I had to incorporate it into my shot and fulfill my urban vision!

Getting out of the bubble just isn’t in the cards sometimes with school schedules, volunteer commitments, work obligations, playdates, family, etc., so making do with what we have around us is essential. Last weekend I taught my first live online photography class: “Location, location, location!” It was such a blast! I’m on the Creative Team at Capture Your 365 and we were celebrating our 4th birthday with a day full of live photography lessons, photo critiques, photo scavenger hunt, and more! We had lots to celebrate and an online web room full of photographers of all levels from around the world to celebrate with! Can you imagine the all the daily photo prompts that have gone into 4 years? Pretty amazing, and still going strong!

My “location, location, location” segment was wonderfully received, so I’m now working on turning it into an e-book. Pretty exciting stuff and more to come on that subject soon!

One of the examples I shared was the photo of my baby girl in all her toughness (and cuteness!) against the wall. Want to know a secret? That wall? It’s the wall of the bathrooms at the park! Yes, that gritty, urban wall… the entrance to the park bathroom! In my e-book, I’ll share my tips and tricks on spotting locations that you wouldn’t necessarily think to use for backgrounds in your photos, transporting your viewer to a destination other than reality, incorporating surroundings in unexpected ways!
