10 on 10 – February // Crazy Love

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // beautiful, spirited daughters, sisters, holding hands in Spanish Village, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA

Sometimes I feel like my daughters make me crazy. Like how many times can I say “put away your shoes?” or “we have to leave before we’re late” or “NO you cannot wear that!” But truth be told, I’m absolutely, unequivocally, head-over-heels, crazy in love with them!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // beautiful, spirited daughters, sisters

They made me a mommy. They pick flowers (sometimes weeds) and lovingly hand me their bouquets. They draw pictures for me and write cards for me. They constantly want my attention and love to sing and dance, showing off their newest moves or lyrics. At bedtime, they ask me to read to them, even though they both can read, especially my 8-yr old who can breeze through chapter books, but still wants me to read to her. They’ve given me the most amazing gift and journey… motherhood. Truly, they’ve made me complete ❤

But life gets busy. I get overwhelmed with the everydayness of life — cooking, cleaning, laundry, chauffeuring, volunteering, working, blogging — everything it takes to make our family life keep plugging away. And I forget to take it all in. To take in my girls as they are right here, right now. So for this month’s 10 on 10, I wanted to focus on just them, my baby girls, before yet another month goes by and I realize I’ve been focusing  my lens on the “stuff”, and not the most important beings: my beautiful, smart, lovely, compassionate, free-spirited, whimsical, silly, big-hearted, musical, fun loving baby girls!

I hope you don’t mind indulging me and letting my proud-mommy-ness shine through ❤ We spent an afternoon in Balboa Park having fun, getting pictures of them being little girls, being themselves. My girls are my life and I love that they radiate joy, love, innocence, sweetness, and all the goodness that my dreams filled with at the thought of having daughters! Truly, I am blessed!

S Mother & Daughters at Balboa Park {Sneak Peek}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Mother, Daughters, Balboa Park, poses, girls, This gorgeous mom (and her beautiful daughters) have been friends with my family since our now 8 year olds were in pre-school! Countless class parties, birthdays, school events, playdates and of course the daily drop-off and pick-up rituals, we’ve spent the last five years sharing life experiences. We especially enjoy trading funny family stories and watching our kids grow!

We’ve chatted about doing a portrait of her and her girls for a while and I was thrilled when we set a date to head to Balboa Park! Can you believe she actually has six kids in total?! We’re planning to do a full family photo session in the spring, but wanted to focus on just the girls right now. She’s amazing – not only does she look like a million bucks, but she’s an incredible mom, volunteers lots and is always there for her kiddos. I admire her parenting as her daughters are such great kids, and totally love that she and her handsome hubby have regular lunch dates! So romantic ❤

I loved working with these gorgeous girls! They were a blast to work with and I hope they all enjoyed their session experience!

O Family at St. Greg’s {Sneak Peek}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Family photography, San Diego, daughters, sisters, dog, O Family, pinkOne of the best parts of having daughters is the fact that they have built in playmates. But throw in the darling best-friends they make at school? And it’s a cuteness overload! I’ve been blessed with the amazing friends my girls have made at school, and it’s total bonus for me when my girls find besties who have fabulous mamas who I totally click with and love spending time with ❤

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Family photography, San Diego, daughters, sisters, dog, O Family, pink

And that is totally the case with the O Family 🙂 They have three of the cutest girls in town and they are an absolute pleasure to be with! It certainly doesn’t hurt that they have a hold of my crafty heart as they are all little crafty artists as well! Our girls love playdates and I was honored to be asked to photograph their gorgeous family.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Family photography, San Diego, daughters, sisters, dog, O Family, pink

We had some crazy weather roll in just as we showed up at our session, but we were thrilled to spend some time capturing all the cuteness we could get before it got too cold. Yes, too cold… in San Diego, California. No, it’s not a typo. Yes, it actually got really cold that afternoon! The girls were troopers, as were their parents, and their sweet old pooch ❤

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Beach Silhouette, sisters, daughters, girls, kids, beach, sunset, jump, balloons, Pacific Ocean, La Jolla ShoresAfter reading the prompt and posting my first “Coastline Silhouettes” response to the Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge: Silhouette, I was inspired and knew I wanted to go out and play some more!

My original post included tips to improve your silhouettes, so if you didn’t already read them, check them out over here.

I invited a dear friend to meet up with my daughters and I for these shots. She and I met in 2010, when I started my formal photography education, and she’s one of my go-to-gals for bouncing ideas (concepts!), discussing photo challenges (help!), and sharing good laughs and support in our photo journeys ❤

We had a blast and look forward to heading out again for another fun photo outing!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Beach Silhouette, mother, son, child, beach, sunsetLearning, whether in the classroom, in books, online or hands-on, is something I love to do, and love to share. You can imagine how ecstatic I was when I met up with fellow San Diego photographer Erika Thornes last year, a connection made through our mutual friend Carole. I was ecstatic she asked me to tag along and offered to teach me the magic of silhouettes!

We captured some amazing shots, and I wrote about the experience here. Huge thank you to Erika for an amazing experience and fabulous launch into the lovely world of silhouettes!

I had recently found out my sister was pregnant, so I looked forward to trying sunset silhouettes with her and her baby bump! The opportunity didn’t come for six months, but it was worth it! You can check out that posts here.

Since then, I’ve taken quite a few silhouette shots – some for client sessions, some of my daughters, some of family and friends, all with lots of heart and excitement!

I actually headed out this evening to the beach with my daughters and a dear friend to have some summer fun and get a few more silhouette shots, but those will have to wait to be posted another day… this mama is tired!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // How to Photograph Silhouettes tutorial, how-to, photo tips

UPDATE: Fellow blogger and friend, Linda asked if I could share some technical tips on capturing silhouettes. I LOVE TO SHARE, SO HERE WE GO

  1. Shoot in Manual Mode
  2. Set your ISO between 1600 and 3200
  3. Use spot metering and adjust your focal point to your subject – you’ll get crisper lines and better focus as your lens won’t have to hunt
  4. Open up your aperture as WIDE as you can go (mine have been between 2.8 and 5.6, depending on lens and distance)
  5. Meter for the sky, adjusting your shutter speed to get the right exposure (mine have usually been between 1/1600 and 1/4000, but as low as 1/400, even 1/8 once — 1/8 is crazy, I know! I’m pretty sure I was using my tripod – that’s the shot of my daughters with the very vast open sky)
  6. Get as low on the ground as you can possibly get. I’m usually laying on my tummy or sitting on my bum at the very least! It elevates your subject so the horizon doesn’t cut through their heads. Aim to get the horizon as close to their feet as possible.
  7. Ask your subjects to give as much distance as possible between their body parts or else it’ll look like a blob! {Imagine someone standing straight, feet together, with arms locked at their sides… blob! Get arms and legs away from body – it if can bend, bend it!}
  8. Have fun! Whether you’re capturing strangers from a distance, or your own family, make sure you try to capture the moment, an emotion, or an action – it’ll give more impact to your image! Good luck!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // family beach day in San Diego, CA

My hubby was born and raised in San Diego – he defines water baby and is in the water regularly from May to October. Even though I’m a born and raised SoCal girl, swimming (especially in the ocean), well, it just ain’t my thang! Thanks heavens my hubby loves the ocean and our girls totally take after him! I truly think they would trade their legs for fins mermaid tails in a heartbeat!

This collection of photos were taken during a family beach day at the end of last summer, when our big girl learned to boogie board! Can’t you see the glee in her face?! And our baby loves being in the water just as much as she loves playing in the sand!

Photo Tip: Take more control of your images by shooting in manual mode and just as important – MOVING your FOCAL POINT! Guide your viewers eye to exactly where you want them to look. don’t make them have to hunt! {Click to Tweet!}

With the business of everyday life, I’m sometimes not the most appreciative, but I know without a doubt I’m blessed beyond belief with all three of my water babies ❤
