10 on 10 – August // Summer Living

I’m so happy to be sharing another 10 on 10 post! It’s been a few months since I’ve been able to play along, so I’m highlighting some of my favorite photos from June and July – get ready for an onslaught of images!

We’ve been living and loving all that Southern California has to offer! Quite a bit has happened the past couple few months – everything from first communion to beach time, cousin play dates to zoo visits, and everything in between! Here we go…

We celebrated my big girl’s first communion in the Catholic Church. What a beautiful spiritual passage for my sweet girl! And luckily, she was able to enjoy this lovely step in our faith with some of her closest friends!

Visiting the zoo with friends and cousins is always great fun! The zoo membership is a great value and we love being able to visit different zones every time!

And it wouldn’t be summer without some beach photos! Besides family and friend beach outings, my girls enjoyed a fantastic week of water sports camp – kayaks, catamaran, sailing and paddle boarding – they loved it all and already want to go back!

2015-06-29_8270_August 2015-06-29_8310_August 2015-06-29_8340_August 2015-07-31_8896_August 2015-07-31_8958_AugustAn annual summer tradition is enjoying the fair with some of our best friends! Food, rides and carnival games… expensive, but totally worth it! We were actually rained on – more like poured on for a while! But we still had a fabulous time!

My girls just adore their little cousin and we love spending time together! Whether they’re blowing bubbles, in the pool, at the zoo, relaxing, playing, or cuddling, it’s the best!

On one of our beach outings in Mexico, I grabbed these shots, knowing I’d want to eventually make stickers for my planner! What do you think? Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sea Shell, quote, Shell Yeah! bokeh, pacific, ocean, beach, Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sea Star, Starfish, quote, let your inner star sparkle, bokeh, pacific, ocean, beach,

I’ll be sharing another Planner post soon, but in the meantime, here’s a little peek of a few of the stickers I’ve been busy adding to the Clicky Chick Creates Etsy shop! By the way, have you been keeping up with my YouTube channel? I’ve been posting a Plan With Me video at least once a month. Be sure to check it out if you’re a planner girl! Oh, and be sure to save September 19th for a day of online planner bliss: True Scrap PLANNERLOVE! It’s the first of it’s kind and I’ll be teaching! I would love to see you there!

Make It Monday // Top Dog Dies Palm Trees

I’m thrilled to share some pretty exciting news with you… I’m part of the Top Dog Dies Fall Design Team! Woohoo! So yes, expect to see lots more crafty posts using the adorable Top Dog Dies. Seriously. Super. Adorable. ❤

TeamAnnouncementFall2015

Besides the amazing dies, the team I’ve joined is totally top-notch. I’m so proud to be part of this team and can’t wait to get to know these girls better! Check them out on their blogs:

So with that news, I’ll also be posting Make It Monday creations much more regularly! Can I get a woot-woot?!

MakeItMondayButton-JulyLet’s kick off July with these fun cards featuring the Top Dog Dies Palm Tree Die Set. Being in California, we have plenty of palm trees, and I certainly love photographing them. But I hadn’t made any cards incorporating them. When I received this die set, I immediately envisioned a beautiful sunset with the silhouette of the palm tree. I think it turned out pretty cute! What do you think? And the bonus was getting the TDD Water Die Set which I loved incorporating, too!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // handmade cards using Top Dog Dies

Here are the steps I took to make the card (product / affiliate links are listed at the bottom of this post):

1. Die cut Palm Tree Die Set and Water Die Set using black card stock.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // handmade cards using Top Dog Dies

2. Created card base for 5″ x 6.5″ card – cut white card stock to 10″ by 6.5″ – scored and folded at 5″ on the long side – set aside.

3. Cut a piece of white card stock to 4.75″ x 6.25″. Used 1/2″ corner rounder on bottom two edges of both card base and slightly smaller card stock piece.

4. Using a blending tool and Tim Holtz Distress Inks, I created the sunset sky background on the 4.75″ x 6.25″ piece of card stock. Starting at the bottom and gently blending in approximately 4 even areas of colors, starting with Spiced Marmalade.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // handmade cards using Top Dog Dies

5. Continued blending of colors with Ripe Persimmon, Festive Berries and Seedless Preserves..

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // handmade cards using Top Dog Dies

6. Heat set inked card stock in order to ensure ink was dry.

7. Using VersaMark Ink, stamped the sentiment, added white embossing powder and heat set.

8. Glued all die cut pieces onto card, being sure to also corner round the water die cut, and swirled a bit of Wink of Stella glitter across the water die cut on the bottom of the card.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // handmade cards using Top Dog Dies

My second card was a bit easier as it really only involved die cutting the Palm Tree Set bits and pieces from a few different papers, most of them scraps that I just hadn’t parted with quite yet!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // handmade cards using Top Dog Dies

Again I used VersaMark ink and white embossing powder for the sentiments, on pink scrap paper and trimmed them for cute word blocks. My favorite part of this card? The open coconut! How cute is that?! Which card do you prefer?

I love this die set and have a third card, but you’ll have to wait for that one. It’s a shaker card and I’ll be sharing that on the Top Dog Dies blog later this month!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Beach Silhouette, mother, son, child, beach, sunsetLearning, whether in the classroom, in books, online or hands-on, is something I love to do, and love to share. You can imagine how ecstatic I was when I met up with fellow San Diego photographer Erika Thornes last year, a connection made through our mutual friend Carole. I was ecstatic she asked me to tag along and offered to teach me the magic of silhouettes!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Beach Silhouette, father, son, child, beach, sunset Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Beach Silhouette, surfers, surfboard, reflection, low tide, beach, sunset

We captured some amazing shots, and I wrote about the experience here. Huge thank you to Erika for an amazing experience and fabulous launch into the lovely world of silhouettes!

I had recently found out my sister was pregnant, so I looked forward to trying sunset silhouettes with her and her baby bump! The opportunity didn’t come for six months, but it was worth it! You can check out that posts here.

Since then, I’ve taken quite a few silhouette shots – some for client sessions, some of my daughters, some of family and friends, all with lots of heart and excitement!

I actually headed out this evening to the beach with my daughters and a dear friend to have some summer fun and get a few more silhouette shots, but those will have to wait to be posted another day… this mama is tired!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // How to Photograph Silhouettes tutorial, how-to, photo tips

UPDATE: Fellow blogger and friend, Linda asked if I could share some technical tips on capturing silhouettes. I LOVE TO SHARE, SO HERE WE GO

  1. Shoot in Manual Mode
  2. Set your ISO between 1600 and 3200
  3. Use spot metering and adjust your focal point to your subject – you’ll get crisper lines and better focus as your lens won’t have to hunt
  4. Open up your aperture as WIDE as you can go (mine have been between 2.8 and 5.6, depending on lens and distance)
  5. Meter for the sky, adjusting your shutter speed to get the right exposure (mine have usually been between 1/1600 and 1/4000, but as low as 1/400, even 1/8 once — 1/8 is crazy, I know! I’m pretty sure I was using my tripod – that’s the shot of my daughters with the very vast open sky)
  6. Get as low on the ground as you can possibly get. I’m usually laying on my tummy or sitting on my bum at the very least! It elevates your subject so the horizon doesn’t cut through their heads. Aim to get the horizon as close to their feet as possible.
  7. Ask your subjects to give as much distance as possible between their body parts or else it’ll look like a blob! {Imagine someone standing straight, feet together, with arms locked at their sides… blob! Get arms and legs away from body – it if can bend, bend it!}
  8. Have fun! Whether you’re capturing strangers from a distance, or your own family, make sure you try to capture the moment, an emotion, or an action – it’ll give more impact to your image! Good luck!

Between // Summer is coming! {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // little girl running into ocean, arms stretched out, excitement, Ralph Waldo Emerson quote "Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air."

Between telling my 7-yr old to only dip her toes in and the allure of the great beautiful Pacific Ocean, my girls decided getting totally wet in their summer dresses and jean jackets was totally appropriate!

Really, is there more to say?! Hope you’re ready to kick-off summer (officially, tomorrow, June 21st, also my birthday – woot-woot!) with as much exuberance as my 7-yr old in this shot! Also, I love, love, love this quote, so I had to pair it with this silhouette. Besides, my daughter defines the “free” and “wild” parts of childhood, this image and quote just really encapsulates her!
