Sisters Through and Through {CY365}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sisters holding hands, photos in front of yellow and cream barn doors

I’ve shared lots about my daughters, and I just have to share these shots from earlier in the year. I had an assignment due for my Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at Capture Your 365 (#CY365) The assignment was experimenting with custom temperature settings on your camera. Haven’t done it? Yeah, I hadn’t either! Definitely explore that capability. I am still in awe!

{Side Note: The Practice! Class runs for a full year and we still have 4 months left. If you’re looking to make practicing your photography a priority and are looking for a class, this is IT! There’s even a mid-year discount on it. Check it out!}

After a very busy few weeks, I had to squeeze in my Practice assignment at the very last minute. Luckily, we were headed to the Girl Scout store in order to get my 7 yr olds Brownie uniform in preparation of her bridging from Daisy to Brownie, and were conveniently down the street from Balboa Park.

During the class webinar and live critique, a fellow photographer (and friend) commented on the barn doors in the shot. They are quite lovely, aren’t they?! But truth be told, they’re actually the doors to the carousel in the park. The carousel doesn’t run often, I think it’s only on weekends, but I’m not sure if the summer schedule is any different? But I digress… back to me and my photos and offering you some tips 🙂

The reason I mention the doors is because over the years, I think I’ve honed my skill of noticing backgrounds, textures and locations to use for photography. Do you take the time to notice what’s right in front of you and easily accessible? So much beauty that isn’t necessarily seen as beautiful from the get-go. {Click on the photos below to link to the original blog posts featuring that specific image and more!}

I invited a dear friend to meet up with my daughters and I for these shots. She and I met in 2010, when I started my formal photography education, and she’s one of my go-to-gals for bouncing ideas (concepts!), discussing photo challenges (help!), and sharing good laughs and support in our photo journeys ❤

We had a blast and look forward to heading out again for another fun photo outing!

While studying photography, one of the more technical classes I took was learning Photoshop. Although it was technical, it was quite creative as we were challenged to create composites — taking multiple photos and creating one seamless image.

Thinking of the Daily Post weekly photo challenge: threshold reminded me of the imaginary and creative worlds that kids are so easily able to enter into everyday of their young lives. My girls love princesses and dress up and all things Disney (um, heard of a little flick called Frozen? Yes, they sing Let it Go or Do You Want to Build a Snowman or In Summer every.single.day!!)  Similar to Frozen’s Elsa, my 7-yr old is convinced she has “cold powers” – see what I mean?!

I love this stage of their lives. I don’t remember ever “losing” that spirit and imaginative stage, but clearly at one point most of us do. I hope my girls always use those fantastic imaginations of theirs and dream BIG!

Birthdays are a big deal around here, celebrating from the moment our girls wake up and usually going for days, even into the weekend! One of our family traditions is filling their room with balloons over night so they wake up with squeals of delight over the sea of birthday balloons! I started the tradition with our first born (now a whopping 7 yrs old) — one of my favorite childhood memories was when I was about ten, my mom put a ton of pink balloons in my room on Valentine’s. I remember feeling so special and loved.

The Daily Post weekly photo challenge: Threshold got me thinking how every birthday or milestone brings new changes, challenges, and developments. My four-year old is turning five next month, so what better time to showcase some of my favorite photos from her birthday morning last year! The anticipation of blowing out the candles and getting to the sweet treat. The excitement of opening presents. The thrill of waking up to a room filled with balloons. It’s all priceless!
