Perspective // From Down Under {Photo Challenge}

Yesterday’s prompt from Katrina Kennedy at Capture Your 365 was “Photograph From Down Under” and when I saw this prickly, pokey, thorny, interesting tree trunk, I knew I had to get a shot! And quite perfect that it fits in with the Perspective theme over at The Daily Post weekly photo challenge. Serendipity!

As I was shooting, I knew what I wanted, but then started playing a bit with getting flare in the shot. What do you think? Do you like the portrait shot with dappled light and blue sky? Or do you prefer the shot with the sunburst and flare?

In February, our focus in in Katrina’s “Practice” class was aperture and one of the lessons had us play with sunbursts and flare. If you haven’t checked out the class yet, you really should! This month we focus on shutter speed – can’t wait to dive into the lessons. Learning so much in this year long class : )

It really is amazing how framing your image can tell such different stories. Over a year ago, when finishing up my classes at UCSD Extension, we headed out to Balboa Park for a field trip. Our class assignment was to shoot with the intention of making it look like we weren’t at Balboa Park. I actually blogged about it back then, and you can read about it here.

I knew the cactus garden would be an ideal spot, and then my beautiful and brave friend Jennifer courageously agreed to go in and get tangled in the tree. But if we step back and take in the entire view, you can see what a vastly different image we get.. drumroll…

And having Jennifer move even closer into the tree, changes the perspective with the cactus in the foreground as seen in this image…

Notice how big the cactus in the foreground became? It was tiny in the first image showing the entire tree, but in this image just above, the plants look enormous! Framing and composing your image really makes such a huge difference, don’t you think? I think each of these photos tell such different stories, but I absolutely love the first image! I think it looks like we were in a very exotic and remote location, far away from our daily mommy duties : )

Photographing PhotograpHers!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // rustic, train, tracks, cowboy, cowgirl, boots. perspective

One of the best things about studying photography was all the outings we would go on during class and field trips. The creativity that came out of those sessions, being able to play with fellow photographers, was always a blast! I’ve written about some of those assignments here, here, here, here and here.

These lovely gals are some of the most amazing friends I made through our photography courses at UCSD. We’ve all finished the certification program, but still keep in touch and get together occasionally for a fun photo shoot. Last week was exactly one of those fun, creative, inspired, playful sessions!

And I have to admit, I was tickled pink when I saw my friend Luca was wearing her beautiful cowgirl boots. Aren’t they amazing?! Love them! I knew exactly what I wanted to photograph…

And you might remember my friend Jennifer from a blog post earlier this year “All is Not as it seams…”– you can read it here. That was during a class field trip. Miss those days!

We seriously had a blast getting these shots! Can’t wait for another session with these girls : )
