Make It Monday // Cardinal Shaker Card {Top Dog Dies}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Christmas shaker card, cardinals, mistletoe, holly, Top Dog Dies

MakeItMondayButton-Christmas2Welcome to another Make It Monday! One of the biggest trends the past year or two has been shaker cards! What’s not to love?! They’re fun, interactive, handmade, and totally make you feel like a kid with grown up class 😀

I loved creating this card, of course using the amazing Top Dog Dies winter dies – specifically the Cardinal Die Set. It comes with the darling cardinals, the tree branch, holly and leaves. Such a sweet set!

I also used the Darice Woodgrain embossing folder to make the cardstock look and feel like a tree, which gives it a little whimsical feel, don’t ya think?

Well, I hope your week is off to a wonderful start and you’re ready to enjoy Thanksgiving with your loved ones! And I definitely hope you’re inspired to make some cardinal shaker cards to share with your loved ones this Christmas season!

New // Think Over {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Champagne ChristmasThe new year is welcomed with new photo challenges…

I have now been blogging for almost two years, with 290 posts, and a huge majority of those being photo focused. I think in 2014, I participated in the Daily Post weekly photo challenge at least 50 of the weeks in the year! But there have been lots of other photo-centered posts, too. Where do I find the inspiration for those? Mostly at Capture Your 365, with daily prompts and a fantastic, inspiring and supportive community. Katrina decided to mix things up a bit this year and along with the daily prompts, we have weekly overarching themes. So whether you’re interested in daily or weekly inspiration, CY365 is another great source to tap into! Have you signed up for the free daily prompts? You’ll see my contributions as part of the Creative Team! Be sure to say hi if you pop over to the gallery or forum!

For today’s post, I decided to merge both DP and CY365 prompts… NEW and THINK OVER.

The new year usually brings along new resolutions. We spent a lot of family time together yesterday, starting our day with a lovely hike at a beautiful San Diego trail.

Last night, we continued our new year’s celebration with family game night. I also decided to enjoy another glass of champagne! While we were enjoying our game, with the tree and lights in the background, I was contemplating my goals and dreams for the year… more champagne, more photos, more family time, better time management, more patience, less stress, better sleep schedule, more business, less sugar, more crafting. Still need some ironing out, but at least I’m thinking it over! What are your goals, dreams, resolutions for the year?

Twinkle // Bokeh Snow Globes {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Bokeh and twinkle filled snow globes, star bokeh, ChristmasThe magic of the season is having taking notice of the small things and being grateful. My girls are still young and continue to love snow globes, with a beautiful twinkle in their eyes. How could they not when their little faces are in those adorable snow globes?!

Using a handmade filter to create the star shaped bokeh made this project extra fun! I used the bokeh tips my amazing friend Katrina Kennedy shared over at Capture Your 365 to learn how to make it. Using a star shaped paper punch gave me the perfect star!

Sisters Through and Through {CY365}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sisters holding hands, photos in front of yellow and cream barn doors

I’ve shared lots about my daughters, and I just have to share these shots from earlier in the year. I had an assignment due for my Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at Capture Your 365 (#CY365) The assignment was experimenting with custom temperature settings on your camera. Haven’t done it? Yeah, I hadn’t either! Definitely explore that capability. I am still in awe!

{Side Note: The Practice! Class runs for a full year and we still have 4 months left. If you’re looking to make practicing your photography a priority and are looking for a class, this is IT! There’s even a mid-year discount on it. Check it out!}

Practice1

After a very busy few weeks, I had to squeeze in my Practice assignment at the very last minute. Luckily, we were headed to the Girl Scout store in order to get my 7 yr olds Brownie uniform in preparation of her bridging from Daisy to Brownie, and were conveniently down the street from Balboa Park.

During the class webinar and live critique, a fellow photographer (and friend) commented on the barn doors in the shot. They are quite lovely, aren’t they?! But truth be told, they’re actually the doors to the carousel in the park. The carousel doesn’t run often, I think it’s only on weekends, but I’m not sure if the summer schedule is any different? But I digress… back to me and my photos and offering you some tips 🙂

The reason I mention the doors is because over the years, I think I’ve honed my skill of noticing backgrounds, textures and locations to use for photography. Do you take the time to notice what’s right in front of you and easily accessible? So much beauty that isn’t necessarily seen as beautiful from the get-go. {Click on the photos below to link to the original blog posts featuring that specific image and more!}

Dialogue // Diptychs {Photo Challenge}

Using a diptych, whether to tell a story, to show details, to show a comparison, scale or sequence, is fabulous to help convey an idea, or to plant the seed to new ideas…

What do these say to you? What dialogue is taking place between the images? Do you hear a story?

Fray // Mexican Palm {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Mexican Palm Tree, frayed, B&W, abstract, natureThe minute I saw the Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge: Fray, I immediately thought of the Mexican Palm tree that was in the front yard of the house my husband and I called home for 13 years.

I’ve written and posted about that tree here, but how could I resist sharing these photos again?! And in that old post, I share the story about the tiny leaf protruding from the edge of a planter in our front yard…
