Warmth // My Girls {Photo Challenge}

Warm Seasons Greetings from my family to yours!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sister photo session, Iron Mountain Trail, Old Poway Park, sisters, rustic, park, field

My girls, as most kids in born in the last decade, are quite comfortable being in front of the camera. They automatically warm up to it and have their poses down… from sweet sisters, to silly faces, to rockstar poses! They crack me up and I’m blessed to be their mama!

PHOTO TIP: When photographing kids, be sure to give them breaks in between settings to get the wiggles out! Those are some of my fave shots and it keeps them fresh and engaged! {Click to Tweet}

Something that keeps me “warm” with the camera is being engaged in the Capture Your 365 community. The daily prompts keep ideas fresh, creativity flowing, and getting a shot top of mind! Have you joined the free email list yet? Hop on over and get your daily dose of inspiration 🙂 January 1st is a great time to start your daily (or weekly) photo project! Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // La Jolla, beach, photography, San Diego, cove, morning, waves, crashing, shellDid you participate in Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk Day, this past Saturday, October 11th? I did! I headed down to La Jolla Cove to join the walk happening there. It wasn’t exactly what I expected as everyone went their separate ways, but I was able to get some nice shots of our San Diego gem!

My amazing friend Katrina Kennedy with Capture Your 365 is hosting a Photo Walk After Party, this coming Sunday, October 19th, 6pm PST. Guess who’ll be on the show with her? Me, me, me! I’m super excited 🙂

Sisters Through and Through {CY365}

I’ve shared lots about my daughters, and I just have to share these shots from earlier in the year. I had an assignment due for my Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at Capture Your 365 (#CY365) The assignment was experimenting with custom temperature settings on your camera. Haven’t done it? Yeah, I hadn’t either! Definitely explore that capability. I am still in awe!

{Side Note: The Practice! Class runs for a full year and we still have 4 months left. If you’re looking to make practicing your photography a priority and are looking for a class, this is IT! There’s even a mid-year discount on it. Check it out!}

After a very busy few weeks, I had to squeeze in my Practice assignment at the very last minute. Luckily, we were headed to the Girl Scout store in order to get my 7 yr olds Brownie uniform in preparation of her bridging from Daisy to Brownie, and were conveniently down the street from Balboa Park.

During the class webinar and live critique, a fellow photographer (and friend) commented on the barn doors in the shot. They are quite lovely, aren’t they?! But truth be told, they’re actually the doors to the carousel in the park. The carousel doesn’t run often, I think it’s only on weekends, but I’m not sure if the summer schedule is any different? But I digress… back to me and my photos and offering you some tips 🙂

The reason I mention the doors is because over the years, I think I’ve honed my skill of noticing backgrounds, textures and locations to use for photography. Do you take the time to notice what’s right in front of you and easily accessible? So much beauty that isn’t necessarily seen as beautiful from the get-go. {Click on the photos below to link to the original blog posts featuring that specific image and more!}

Nighttime // Seaport Village {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Seaport Village San Diego nighttime photography

The year-long “Practice” photography class I’m taking with Katrina Kennedy over at Capture Your 365 challenges me every month by being behind the lens with intention. Last month, the subject was Landscape photography and I realized that as much as I love landscapes, I just don’t do many of them. Nowadays, seems I direct my lens at people much more often than scenery 🙂

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Seaport Village San Diego nighttime photography

So I headed out to Seaport Village, a tourist spot on the harbor near downtown San Diego. I once owned a retail clothing store there, so it’s definitely my old stomping grounds!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Seaport Village San Diego nighttime photography

Maybe it’s because I expect more from myself, but I was really challenged with the landscape exercise, but probably more so because I arrived so late!

PHOTO TIP: Heading out for nighttime photography? Be sure to bring along a handy tripod, even an inexpensive one, for slow shutter speed, letting in plenty of light!

Do you photograph with intention? Being in “Practice” keeps me shooting intentionally and growing as a photographer. There is now mid-year pricing on the class. Check it out!

Beachy Texture and a GIVEAWAY!!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // rustic, worn, beach, pier, woodIt’s Friday, which means the Daily Post came out with a new photo challenge for the week: Texture! Lucky for me, I grabbed these shots earlier this summer while my hubby, daughters and I headed to the beach for a sunset walk. There’s an old… wait, before I tell you about what’s in the shot, I have to give you some backstory…

Years ago, I knew the kinds of images I wanted to capture – images just like these – I could see them in my mind, but I didn’t know how to get them. Have you been there? Have you envisioned a specific image, but aren’t quite sure how to capture it? Well, I’m going to share with you two aspects that have been monumental in my development as a photographer…

1. Knowledge is POWER! If you’ve read a blog post or two (or a hundred) here at Clicky Chick Creates, then you know I’m an education junkie. When I am passionate about a subject, I want to learn all there is about it. And that has definitely remained steadfast in my evolution as a photographer.

The first thing that rocked my world behind the lens: learning to shoot in manual mode. Taking the power of the camera, developing your eye and shooting with intention? Absolute recipe for success!

2. Shooting with INTENTION… that’s right, I said it again! But I don’t mean “oh, I want to photograph a yellow rose!” I mean looking at our everyday environments, whether we’re at home, work, school, running errands, running for exercise, or running away for a vacation, looking around and enjoying the little details. It’s the beauty in those details, those everyday bits and pieces of our days, that beckon to be photographed.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // rustic, worn, beach, pier, wood

Being part of Katrina Kennedy’s Capture Your 365 community and “Practice!” class has been a beautiful daily reminder to be thoughtful in the everyday surroundings, wherever I may be, and has without a doubt elevated my everyday intentional shooting. That’s why I’m honored and excited to announce another giveaway…

But first imagine… Imagine you’re able to take more control of your camera, harness the power in that DSLR and get the shots you want! Well, you’re in luck!

Your Life Captured Through the Lens GIVEAWAY!!

I’m so excited to giveaway a seat in Katrina’s upcoming “Your Life Captured Through the Lens” class to one lucky reader! For an opportunity to win a seat, just leave a comment telling me what you’re most excited to photograph in manual mode! It’s the Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, San Diego, California 🙂 It’s old, worn, rickety and quite lovely ❤ And the green in the background? The Pacific Ocean underneath the pier!
