Wall // She’s Tough {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // child kid photography, locations, unexpected, wall

My community is really quite lovely. It’s in San Diego, California, and it’s a suburb with a “country living” vibe. It’s a great community, and even though it’s rather large (we have 4 public elementary schools, with about 600 – 800 in each school!), it has a very close, small town feel. Sometimes friends refer to it as living in the bubble. Some call it Mayberry. It’s easy to stay in our neighborhood for weeks on end and suddenly realize you’ve been in the bubble a little too long!

There are times when a photo vision comes to mind. Sometimes inspiration hits for a very specific look, with a distinct feel. That’s exactly what happened, but finding an urban vibe in the bubble can be a bit challenging! So while my little one and I were at one of our many local parks, I noticed the texture on this wall. I knew I had to incorporate it into my shot and fulfill my urban vision!

Getting out of the bubble just isn’t in the cards sometimes with school schedules, volunteer commitments, work obligations, playdates, family, etc., so making do with what we have around us is essential. Last weekend I taught my first live online photography class: “Location, location, location!” It was such a blast! I’m on the Creative Team at Capture Your 365 and we were celebrating our 4th birthday with a day full of live photography lessons, photo critiques, photo scavenger hunt, and more! We had lots to celebrate and an online web room full of photographers of all levels from around the world to celebrate with! Can you imagine the all the daily photo prompts that have gone into 4 years? Pretty amazing, and still going strong!

My “location, location, location” segment was wonderfully received, so I’m now working on turning it into an e-book. Pretty exciting stuff and more to come on that subject soon!

One of the examples I shared was the photo of my baby girl in all her toughness (and cuteness!) against the wall. Want to know a secret? That wall? It’s the wall of the bathrooms at the park! Yes, that gritty, urban wall… the entrance to the park bathroom! In my e-book, I’ll share my tips and tricks on spotting locations that you wouldn’t necessarily think to use for backgrounds in your photos, transporting your viewer to a destination other than reality, incorporating surroundings in unexpected ways!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make It Monday, blog hopBack with another fun Make It Monday! Do you remember the True Scrap classes I’ve mentioned here? True Scrap Events are LIVE online classes full of inspiration, community and fun! Well, we just had True Scrap 6 earlier this month and one of the instructors totally inspired me with her wall display! Layle Koncar taught a fabulous class on interactive mini books, and in the intro of her video clip shared a peek in her studio. She had a similar display and I knew that was exactly what I needed in my space! She actually taught at True Scrap 5 and I had spied that wall display back then, too! I’m so glad I finally got it on my wall and off my to do list!

I’m able to display five 12″x12″ layouts, along with 4 to 5 cards or tags. It’s a little hard to see with the glare, but it really looks awesome! I can’t help but stare at the wall when I’m in my craft room!

The page protectors become side loading and super easy to work with. So what did I use?

Measure out how long you want the telescoping curtain rod to be, then mark where you want the mounts to be – measure out both width and height – you don’t want one side higher than the other! Add your hooks/rings and clips to the rod before you secure it in the mounts. Tighten up the mounts after you place the rod where you want it. Add your layouts to your page protectors SIDE loaded. Clip your layout and page protector onto the rod and enjoy your creations!

I love that I’ll be able to easily swap out layouts, easily displaying new creations. I know my daughters love when I make new pages and now they’ll be able to enjoy them by just walking into the room! I might even do this on another wall in the house to display their art pieces – we have a pretty amazing art program at their school 🙂

14novackermanfreeI can’t help but point out that not only are the projects in the True Scrap classes full of inspiration, but the instructors themselves are amazing! Another True Scrap instructor that I just adore, not only for her projects, but truly for the amazing person she is and how she incorporates faith into her art, is Stephanie Ackerman! She’s teaming up with my friend Lain Ehmann and offering a FREE ONLINE CLASS! Do yourself a favor and sign up here… it’s FREE!! In the scrapinar on November 3rd, Stephanie shares how to turn ordinary text into inspiring, faith-filled works of “Heart!” So excited!

Sisters Through and Through {CY365}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sisters holding hands, photos in front of yellow and cream barn doors

I’ve shared lots about my daughters, and I just have to share these shots from earlier in the year. I had an assignment due for my Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at Capture Your 365 (#CY365) The assignment was experimenting with custom temperature settings on your camera. Haven’t done it? Yeah, I hadn’t either! Definitely explore that capability. I am still in awe!

{Side Note: The Practice! Class runs for a full year and we still have 4 months left. If you’re looking to make practicing your photography a priority and are looking for a class, this is IT! There’s even a mid-year discount on it. Check it out!}

Practice1

After a very busy few weeks, I had to squeeze in my Practice assignment at the very last minute. Luckily, we were headed to the Girl Scout store in order to get my 7 yr olds Brownie uniform in preparation of her bridging from Daisy to Brownie, and were conveniently down the street from Balboa Park.

During the class webinar and live critique, a fellow photographer (and friend) commented on the barn doors in the shot. They are quite lovely, aren’t they?! But truth be told, they’re actually the doors to the carousel in the park. The carousel doesn’t run often, I think it’s only on weekends, but I’m not sure if the summer schedule is any different? But I digress… back to me and my photos and offering you some tips 🙂

The reason I mention the doors is because over the years, I think I’ve honed my skill of noticing backgrounds, textures and locations to use for photography. Do you take the time to notice what’s right in front of you and easily accessible? So much beauty that isn’t necessarily seen as beautiful from the get-go. {Click on the photos below to link to the original blog posts featuring that specific image and more!}
