Do you set up yearly or monthly goals? The mission board has been fantastic for helping me look at my goals in a new way! My One Little Word for the year is FOCUS, so every month I focus on a few areas in life, and set 3 attainable-yet-making-me-stretch goals to reach towards. Works for me, so I thought I’d share!

10 on 10 – May // Macro Flowers

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // macro flower photography Welcome to the May 10 on 10 photo circle! We have a wonderful and full group of fabulous photographers sharing 10 images from last month. If you’re already following the circle, you came from the beautiful photographer Megan Wright. If you haven’t seen her stunning work, be sure to follow the circle all the way around to see all of the gorgeous images!

My sweet friend Kim and I met at the Carlsbad Flower Fields one bright morning for a little creative photo play. It was my first time heading out there, although I’ve seen the beautiful fields over the last 20 years from a distance, driving by on the freeway. It was a wonderful outing and I definitely encourage you to head over there if you ever get the chance!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // macro flower photography

I couldn’t help but want to play with my Tamron 90mm macro lens. I brought other lenses, but my macro got all the love that day and stayed on the entire morning!

Kim and I were inspired by our lovely friend Luca – she shared images from her family outing to the flower fields last month. As soon as we saw a sneak peek of her photos, we immediately made plans to head out! Talk about being inspired ❤

Now I hope you’ll be inspired to continue the 10 on 10 circle and head on over to the lovely Suzanne O’Brien. Her posts are always delightful and her images are always stunning – full of light, color and life! Be sure to leave all the photographers some comment love

Intricate // Macro Details {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // macro photograph of petal layers of pink rose

I’m squeaking in at the 11th hour with my submission to the Daily Post photo challenge this week. The theme is “Intricate” and these recent photos are totally in my mind with the amazing details that get overlooked so very often.

Have you ever looked closely at the details on the petals of a rose? Or the wick of a candle? Sometimes, it’s just the little things that fascinate!

I truly love when my girls notice the world around them and proudly point out their discovery to me. Maybe it’s the photographer in me, but it’s definitely the mama in me, that smiles ear-to-ear, happy and proud that my girls are observant and appreciative of the world around them! My 5-year old had to stop us dead in our tracks while we visited the San Diego Zoo with our sweet friends Lynnette and Gracie, when she noticed this beautiful heart shaped leaf. It was high above us, but somehow she noticed it and I love that she made us pause to take in it’s beauty.

What tiny details have you noticed lately? Are you documenting it? The daily prompts at Capture Your 365 are fantastic to help get you into the routine of noticing and photographing the details around you. If you haven’t checked it out yet, and you love photography, be sure to click here to take a look. You won’t regret it!

Vintage Beauty {Feeling Crafty}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Vintage Beauty scrapbook layout page, embossing on die cuts, punches, fussy cutting, pink, brown, black, retro, kitchen

Product choices can help make our layout choices so much easier! I loved these photos of my baby girl and the vibe they gave with her dress and the retro kitchen. Digging through my stash, I found some old Teresa Collins journaling cards on a 12×12 sheet and loved the design. I wanted to mimic the feel of it, so I cut out a similar shape on pink cardstock using my Slice e-cutter, then heat embossed the edge of it with black embossing powder for the close-up photo.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Vintage Beauty scrapbook layout page, embossing on die cuts, punches, fussy cutting, pink, brown, black, retro, kitchen Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Vintage Beauty scrapbook layout page, embossing on die cuts, punches, fussy cutting, pink, brown, black, retro, kitchen

Using a punch on the edge for the bigger frame, I used the same heat embossing technique to create a custom look on the frame. Neither frame is “perfect” but it looks very vintage which works for this layout!

Adding details in similar colors and to support the vintage vibe just pulls it all together, even though all the pieces are from separate collections, spanning at least 5 years! I don’t make a lot of my own kits, but this layout inspires me to do that and create custom kits to meet my eclectic needs! How about you? Do you use kits? Do you create your own kits? I’d love to hear your insights and tips!

The photos were taken at a friend’s birthday party, but wouldn’t that be an adorable kitchen to use as a photo prop in a studio?! I totally loved it!

One of the ways I’ve developed my own style and feel quite comfortable creating layouts is from the assortment of classes I’ve taken. Rule of Thirds // Rosey Tutorial {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // macro shot of pink rose, natural light, curves, petalsAre you familiar with the “rule of thirds” in photography? How about adjusting your focal point manually? If not, get ready for a whole new world to open up in your photos!

My first daughter was born in the fall of 2006 and my push/Christmas gift was my first DSLR. Lucky girl, I know! Two new babies to love, lol!

I quickly realized the photos I envisioned capturing of my new baby with my brand new camera just were NOT happening. Total blur. Underexposed. Overexposed. Bleh. Nothing felt comfortable or natural those first few weeks of having that camera. I needed a class to learn how to use the camera if I was ever going to be happy using it.

So that’s exactly what I did all those wonderful years ago! And I can honestly say that learning to shoot manual made my colorful world such a happy, happy place! Two of the tips I learned in that first class were about the rule of thirds and adjusting my focal point. Now, I rarely compose a shot without using both of those – visually composing my shot with a tic tac toe grid and adjusting my focal point, almost always onto one of the thirds lines or the sweet spot of where those lines intersect.

Not sure how to do it? I use a Canon 60D, and it was relatively the same on my Rebel XTi. Hope it helps you!

1. Click on the zoom in button in the right hand corner

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // focal point selection, tutorial, manual focus

2. You’ll see the Automatic selection screen come up showing all the focal points colored blue:

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // focal point selection, tutorial, manual focus

3. Use either wheel to move the selection to just one of the points:

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // focal point selection, tutorial, manual focus Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // focal point selection, tutorial, manual focus

4. This is the focal point I used for the rose image above 🙂

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // focal point selection, tutorial, manual focus

5. Using the rule of thirds — the tic tac toe grid lines that break your image into three rows and three columns — visually on your image helps as well, giving a stronger composition to your photos. The point I selected above coordinates with the focal point I used for the rose. Do you see the faint grid lines below?

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // macro shot of pink rose, natural light, curves, petals, rule of thirds

6. Using any of these four focal points gets you on or near the intersection of the rule of thirds lines. That right there? That’s the sweet spot! Aim for THAT!  {Juicy tip, right?! Click to Tweet!}Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // focal point selection, tutorial, manual focus
