Vintage Beauty {Feeling Crafty}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Vintage Beauty scrapbook layout page, embossing on die cuts, punches, fussy cutting, pink, brown, black, retro, kitchen

Product choices can help make our layout choices so much easier! I loved these photos of my baby girl and the vibe they gave with her dress and the retro kitchen. Digging through my stash, I found some old Teresa Collins journaling cards on a 12×12 sheet and loved the design. I wanted to mimic the feel of it, so I cut out a similar shape on pink cardstock using my Slice e-cutter, then heat embossed the edge of it with black embossing powder for the close-up photo.

Using a punch on the edge for the bigger frame, I used the same heat embossing technique to create a custom look on the frame. Neither frame is “perfect” but it looks very vintage which works for this layout!

Adding details in similar colors and to support the vintage vibe just pulls it all together, even though all the pieces are from separate collections, spanning at least 5 years! I don’t make a lot of my own kits, but this layout inspires me to do that and create custom kits to meet my eclectic needs! How about you? Do you use kits? Do you create your own kits? I’d love to hear your insights and tips!

The photos were taken at a friend’s birthday party, but wouldn’t that be an adorable kitchen to use as a photo prop in a studio?! I totally loved it!

One of the ways I’ve developed my own style and feel quite comfortable creating layouts is from the assortment of classes I’ve taken. Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make it Monday blog circle in greenWelcome to another Make It Monday circle! I’m so excited to share these cupcake toppers I recently made for the Father-Daughter Dance “Mustache and Tiara Ball II” at my girls’ school! It’s an annual event and I LOVE that my girls and hubby enjoy their big night out, getting dressed up, going out to a nice dinner, and overall having a ball!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // PRINTABLES on Etsy, mustache, tiara, cupcake toppers, easy, simple, DIY, father-daughter dance, ball, party

My baby is in kindergarten this year, so she was thrilled to get to go too. My 2nd grader wasn’t thrilled to have sis in tow as it’s she had 3 years of going solo with her Daddy! Ah, sister drama! But I digress… I had a blast making these cupcake toppers for the big night. Our school is definitely full of loving parents who volunteer their time and talents (along with their treasures!) to the school, and these toppers were going to be paired with yummy cupcakes prepared by other mommies!

Did you notice the “II” after “Mustache and Tiara Ball” earlier? Yes, this was the second year we’ve had this theme, so I actually made similar toppers last year. And I realized, I’m probably not alone needing toppers for this theme! So, what’s a girl to do? I added these printables to my Etsy shop! All that’s need after printing up the sheets, is a few different punches to create these perfectly adorable toppers!

You can purchase the instant downloads from my Etsy shop – the MUSTACHES alone, the TIARAS alone, or a COMBO of both mustaches and tiaras!

They were super easy to make with the printable, a handful of punches and of course glitter! Once they were punched and glued onto bamboo forks and lollipop sticks, I added a touch of glitter to really make them look like a million bucks! I ended up volunteering the night of the party taking candid photos, and I was so happy to see lots of little girls who had devoured their cupcake treats, but were still holding onto the toppers! So cute!

Make It Monday // Planner Craze on the Cheap

Have you jumped on the paper planner craze? I’ve used my iPhone for my scheduling for years – iCal and Notes mostly, sometimes Reminders, but honestly? It just wasn’t working for me! I was feeling really overwhelmed at the end of the year and started noodling with the idea of going back to a paper planner. Lo and behold I stumbled on the paper planner communities out there and have been consumed / in love / aghast with all the YouTube videos on planners! Egads!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make It Monday, blog circleWelcome to our Make It Monday: “Organization” circle! You may have noticed some of our Monday’s have themes? Well today we’re chatting up organization! And what’s getting me organized these days? My planner! So, here we go…

As much as I’ve been wanting to splurge on the gorgeous gold foil Erin Condren Life Planner (ECLP), I am being practical and promised myself I’d see if I could actually stick to using a cheap planner consistently for 2 months before I splurge! I’ve heard it takes 21 days of repeated/consistent behavior to develop a habit? So far, so good!

I bought an inexpensive (on sale for $7) planner at Target the first week of January, and it really is helping me keep organized. I have so many ideas running loose in my head, and this is helping me corral it all into one practical place! What I love about the ECLP is the layout of the week, with days laid out in a vertical format. The one I bought is NOT laid out that way, but I customized it by adding washi tape down the center to create a “time scheduled” block and a “to do” block for each day.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

That was where I started. Then I decided I wanted to add some sort of a checkmark system for the “to do” section, and although I found some adorable stamps that I really want at Studio L2E, I’m again committed to being frugal. So I searched my mountain of stamps for an open square to create a cute checkbox, but knew I had to use the heart I found instead – it was a perfect fit!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

Once I complete a task, I fill in the heart 🙂 I’m just a goofy dork that way! I should mention I’m loving the erasable Frixion pens. They’re super duper amazing!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

So that’s got me moving in the right direction. That alone has helped me organize my days with time commitments and to do’s for the week. So nice to not have to worry about forgetting something because it’s rolling around in my head with a million other to do’s instead of nicely planned in my planner 😉 Of course there are the occasional slip ups, but it really is helping me plan out my days.

Every night before I go to bed, I review my planner and see what I have going on the next day as far as scheduled obligations, what “to do’s” I may have not completed that day, and what needs to be done the next day. Then I review it again first thing in the morning. It’s really helping me get my day started on the right foot and certainly end the night feeling more accomplished than I started the day!

The other areas I needed to get a grip on included: 1). my creative team responsibilities at Capture Your 365; 2). an editorial calendar for my Make It Monday blog circle with a group of fabulous creatives (who are also my inspiring creative friends!); and 3). projects that I wanted to get to, but didn’t have an actual deadline.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheapConnie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

Too many times I feel like my dog chasing my tail. We all know how easy it is to jump on the computer and get sidetracked. You jump on to pay a bill and an hour later you’ve forgotten about the bill but caught up on Instagram, answered a couple emails, and checked in with a couple of Facebook groups. Yup, easy to do. Unfortunately, I tend to do that with a lot of my life, and have a lot of half-baked crafty, bloggy and photo projects. Having my tasks written down is helping me keep focused…yay!

When I bought the planner in January, it came with November and December 2014 month views (2-page spreads) that I wasn’t going to use. I figured these pages were perfect for a “Project Ideas” page, so I covered up the month and days using washi tape, creating a grid to write in projects. Then, I realized the removable stickers we used to use when we had our retail businesses would be great to use for these projects so I could move around the projects! I add them to my evolving list and once the project is complete, I move it to the date or week I completed it.

I color coded my projects based on my Etsy store, Society6 store, Craft Ideas for the Blog, Planner/Organization, YouTube and more!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

Somewhere I saw Washi wrapped around playing cards and thought that was a great idea instead of carrying a ton of rolls of Washi! I have a great assortment without lugging them all around! I have these secured to the inside of the front cover. I added Washi to the bottom as well so the cards don’t move around.

The last piece of organizing I’ll share with you is my grocery list and meal planning. Remember how I said I used Notes on my iPhone? I would usually write my grocery list on there, so I had quite a few to go back to reference. I made a master grocery list in Excel and print 3 weeks worth on one sheet. Before I head to the grocery store, I get my meals planned for the week and cross out the items I don’t need to purchase. I use more removable stickers to plan our dinner menu for the week, and can move them around as needed. I use some crafting markers to customize the round and rectangular removable stickers. I like love color and coding this way helps me keep it pretty AND organized!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // #planneraddict, paper, planner, organization, tips, strategies, suggestions, customizing, inexpensive, cheap

So I’m sharing all these ideas with you in case you’ve had any of the same hiccups I’ve hit along the way. Maybe my grocery list and meal planning idea will help you develop a more efficient system for you and your family! Perhaps my Editorial Calendar format will help you organize your creative projects a little better. One project I haven’t made yet has been inspired by my sweet friend Cara at the Hooting Pirate – she created a pen holder with Duct Tape and a bullfrog clip. Super cute! Be sure to check it out here!

And the last piece I’ll share is a little love note I found in my planner from my 8-yr old. Color me happy and lucky in love ❤ I decided to use some of the washi tape to draw attention to that sweetness!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Make It Monday, blog circleYes, I really did it… I made a banner for my Brownies to use in their cookie booth to help with cookie sales! Welcome to another Make It Monday! I hope this weekly dose of inspiration is a fun way to kick off your week!

If you’re in the US, you may have noticed cute Girl Scouts around your community selling the yummy, seasonal Girl Scout Cookies at booths around your local grocery stores? Our troop was out there, too! So of course I had to make a cute banner for our girls to use in their sales efforts!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Girl Scout Cookies banner, perfect for booth sales! Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Girl Scout Cookies banner, perfect for booth sales! I love when I’m able to use tools on hand to create a look I’m going for, without buying new supplies. Making the banner was a breeze using the tools listed below. I wanted to add a cookie look, so I used my handy-dandy chevron stamp and Walnut Stain Distress Ink on a scalloped circle die cut to create a look similar to Samoas, the tasty toasted coconut, caramel and chocolate cookie. I think I pulled it off! What do you think?

What unexpected look have you been able to pull off using supplies on hand? I’d love to hear! It’s always fun to use my stash in unusual ways, creating a look I wanted, but didn’t have the obvious tool! Like using a swirl embossing folder to create lambs for a banner. Or a snow marker to create crashing ocean waves. Fun stuff!

And if you landed here because you searched Girl Scouts, be sure to check out my post about the self-esteem building craft I did with my daughter’s troop. My daughter still loves it and Pinterest tells me it’s a pretty popular post 🙂

So I have to ask… do the winter months leave you feeling a little blah? Too much gray? An abundance of drab? Well, then let’s add some color and sparkle to chase those blah’s away!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Hand Embossed Clothes Pins

Embossed Clothes Pins

First up, I created some embossed clothes pins. I actually made my first set of embossed clothes pins a couple of years ago for my sister’s baby shower. We used them to pin up baby onesies as decoration for the party. They turned out super cute and I was inspired to create some more recently. My sweet friend Dietra asked if I would be posting on my Etsy shop or if I would show how I made them. So I’m doing both!

How cute would this be as a gift packaging?

And here’s how we used some at the baby shower…

Shaker CARD

Here’s a sweet and simple mini shaker card I created… Look for the video coming in the next couple days!

I wanted to use a snowflake, and thought how fun it would be to play off the “flake” part! It would be great for a belated birthday or I’m sorry card!

Are you ready to get creative? Hope so! But if you’re ready to shop instead, head on over to my Etsy shop!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // CHA 2015 faves

Welcome to the first 10 on 10 of 2015! You may have come to me from Kathleen Ries and her beautiful “beginnings” post – hope you loved it and continue the hop on over to my sweet and lovely friend Kim Bajorek!

Ready for a peek into CHA and walk a little bit of the floor with me?

Be still my beating heart! So many amazing goodies were showcased and demoed at the Craft & Hobby Association 2015 MEGA Show! I barely scratched the surface while I spent a single day at the show, but I wanted to share a little insight into my perspective from the show floor!

Before I even get into a few of the products that I can’t wait to get my hands on, I have to point out that I bee-lined straight to some of my favorite booths to see the people and products that have most influenced me in this wonderful crafty hobby I love so much! As much as I love the great products, they may have been just a touch overshadowed by the fabulous people who have shared lessons and tips to make my journey in this crafty world even sweeter! And I have to mention that my sweet friend Melissa was with me and was kind enough to grab my camera to get me in some of the shots 🙂

Do you love all Ranger products as much as I do? Dylusions, Tim Holtz, Wendy Vecchi? All amazing! Dyan Reaveley introduced Dylusions Paints which looked so amazing and dried super fast – she absolutely makes me want to get into art journaling! Tim’s new Stampers Anonymous stencils look fantastic – so many are on my wish list! And Wendy Vecchi’s embossing powders are gorgeous. As she demoed them, she mixed some with her matching inks and frosted crystal – so pretty! And her stencil/stamp sets are awesome too!

My beautiful and amazingly talented friend Jen Gallacher was at the Echo Park booth and I was quite the happy camper to see her! We met through a crafty business networking group in 2013 and I’m in awe of the progress she’s made as a product designer and marketing maven. Go Jen! She has no idea how much she inspires me ❤

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer was at The Crafter’s Workshop booth, showing her beautiful new stencils. We got there just as the show was closing, but she was a doll and kept chatting with us. Her mama Eileen joined us too – she’s beyond adorable and insightful! She’s like Yoda, Carol Brady and Margaret Cho rolled into one!

Back in 2009, when my baby was born and I was up in the wee hours of the night nursing, I stumbled on a show called Scrapbook Memories – it was a TV show about scrapbooking! I had just started in the hobby, but I was truly in awe of Julie’s artsy approach and Stacy Julian’s colorful and story based scrapbooking. I made Julie laugh when I told her that I could be described as their perfect love child 🙂

Art Anthology had some lovely samples out and I was totally struck by these brushes on canvas… what a fun project! I love using their Sorbet’s in my techniques class – such a fun way to add texture, dimension and sparkle onto projects! They have a beautiful selection of vibrant colors and I can’t wait to try their new paints that offer different textural finishes.

Spellbinders came out with an adorable line of fun and festive dies, perfect for parties and events of all sorts! I loved the party decor they had staged…you know it’s good when you immediately want to go home and create because you’re so inspired!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // CHA 2015 faves Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // CHA 2015 faves

Maggie Holmes and Shimelle Laine each have gorgeous lines with American Crafts. They were both incredibly sweet to chat with about all kinds of goodness…from photography and scrapbooking to babies to hoarding paper that we couldn’t live without and now find incredibly horrible and lots more! I couldn’t help but get a shot of Shimelle’s adorable red sparkly shoes…how cute is is that she’s from Kansas!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // CHA 2015 faves

A couple other must have products included new dies from Lawn Fawn – perfect for party supplies on my Etsy shop! And Deco Foil for the must-have, on-trend, metallic foil treatment on DIY projects! Using cardstock, a toner printer, creating a jacket with copy paper, and running through a laminator, we were able to create beautiful metallic foiled cards and projects. Very similar to the Heidi Swapp Minc, which was pretty amazing too!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // CHA 2015 faves

I know it was brief, but I hope you like my quick peek into CHA Winter 2015! I’m already planning to stay for at least two days next year! So much to see and one day just really did NOT cut it!

As always, thanks for stopping by to check out what I’m up to these days! Be sure to continue the 10 on 10 circle and head on over to my sweet friend Kim Bajorek – she’s a beauty inside and out, with an inspiring view of the world!
