Letters // Sisters {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Handful of Sisterly Love, little girls wearing matching "Big Sis" and "Lil Sis" bracelets

My daughters, like any sisters, have their ups and downs. But even when one is bugging the other, or one is taking the other’s toys, or they’ve had a little too much of each other for the day, they’re still best friends and sisters, through thick and thin!

Originally, after reading the Daily Post weekly photo challenge: Letters photo prompt, I was about to dig in my archives for a photo (or a few) that fit, but then I spied my girls were wearing their matching bracelets. How could I pass up the opportunity to photograph those cute little girl hands playing in the backyard?!

Capturing everyday moments like this makes my heart happy. I can really feel it when I review my photos – whether I’m searching for a specific photo for a photo challenge, or a photo to scrapbook, or editing photos for a gift – anytime I make a quick scan of my Lightroom library or the walls of my home, my heart is happy! Do you take the time to photograph your everyday moments? Maybe turning those everyday moments into art? Being part of the community at Capture Your 365 has been instrumental as a reminder to photograph those everyday moments which can easily be overlooked or sometimes forgotten. Those truly are the moments that make life incredibly beautiful.

If you’re a photography and podcast junkie like I am, take a listen to Katrina and Kelly on the Capture Your 365 podcast. Always a great listen, and I have to admit, my jaw is still on the floor and I can’t take the silly grin off my face as Katrina mentioned me (yes, ME!) on the “Do You Think About Composition” CY365 episode 10!! Let me know what you think?!

As always, thanks for stopping by. Have a joyful, creative, blessing filled day!

Juxtaposition // Bubbly Toes {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Little Girls wearing Mama's shoes, dress up, toes, growing up

I was a bit stumped with The Daily Post weekly photo challenge: Juxtaposition. I could see ideas in my mind, but nothing was coming together yesterday. Then, I realized these shots I captured earlier this month fit the bill perfectly! The shots were inspired from the Capture Your 365 prompt “Where You Stand” – love Katrina’s daily prompts!

When I was pregnant, I prayed and prayed for girls, and I was blessed with answered prayers. My girls are now 7 and 4 years old, and have always loved playing dress up, and ocassionally putting on my shoes and walking around the house. Those shoes have usually been my sneaks, UGGs, or flip flops – life of a stay-at-home-mama. But my 7 year old recently eyed my neatly-organized, rarely-used boxes and boxes of heels and has been obsessed wearing them around the house as much as possible! And of course whatever big sister does, little sister has to do too!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Little Girls wearing Mama's shoes, dress up, toes, growing upThis is such a concrete reminder of how fast they’re growing and that even though my prayers for baby girls were answered, those babies will grow up to be big girls one day. The juxtaposition of their bubbly baby toes in my big girl heals just reminds me how much they’ve grown, how little they still are, and where we’re headed. For now, I’ll just have to enjoy the sweet little girl moments as much as possible!

Curious Georgia!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // vintage old time session featuring Curious Georgia dresses

You know those friendships that are super amazing at one point in life, and then for some unexpected reason, without drama or falling out, the current of life just takes you in different directions? Well, meet my friend Heather, one of my brilliant friends from college whom I share one of those friendships with!

Image

During the ’90’s while at SDSU, we were roommates with big dreams and ambitions, ready to conquer the world! We were opposites in many ways – she was blonde haired, blue eyed, fair and tall; I was brown haired, brown eyed, dark and short average height. She was from Northern California; I was from Southern California. She was sweet and innocent; I was wild and reckless. We were Oscar and Felix and I was definitely the messy one! We had such great times and heck what early twenty year old cuties living on a fantastic Greek cul-de-sac with awesome TGI Friday afternoon parties wouldn’t?! I have to admit that I can’t hear James Taylor without thinking of her as playing his greatest hits cd was our nightly bedtime ritual! And although I’m not a Facebook fanatic as I was five years ago, I am thankful to Mark Zuckerberg and his nerdy brilliance for reconnecting me with such a beautiful and amazing friend I’d lost track of over the years.

So let’s fast forward from the ’90’s to about five years ago. Heather and I reconnected on Facebook, and have kept in touch, watching our families grow and our businesses launch. She has the most adorable and beautiful daughters, and being the phenomenally creative person she is, she would make the cutest and sweetest clothes for her girls. Sure and soon enough, friends were inquiring about her ensembles and requesting custom pieces for their kiddos, too. And that’s when her Etsy store Curious Georgia was born!

Knowing my love of photography, and my daughter’s love of dresses, Heather sent us these adorable dresses so we could have a fun little photo shoot. Talk about LOVE! And these aren’t the first Curious Georgia goodies my girls have worn and loved. Heather’s quality and attention to detail are impeccable. My girls adore their twirly skirts (what little girl wouldn’t?!) and their new dresses are now favorites as well!

I really don’t mean to sound like an infomercial, but as a former retail boutique owner and entrepreneur at heart, I love supporting small businesses, especially those with fantastic goodies and great prices. Next time you’re looking for something special for that one-of-a-kind kid, newborn baby, and even the little dudes in your life, do yourself and your gift recipient a HUGE favor and check out Curious Georgia! You will not be disappointed!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun {Photo Fridays}

2013-01-16_7233_smallMy girls absolutely love all things girly. Princesses. Pink. Make-up. Flowers. Dresses. Headbands. Make-up. Butterflies. Dress-up. Crafting. Really, anything and everything girly. And did I mention make-up?!

2013-01-16_7250_small

They were so excited when earlier this year I had an environmental portraiture assignment and specifically asked them to play with some make-up. I loved getting these shots, just letting them be themselves, watching what they did with the brushes, lipsticks and other goodies!

Their expressions are priceless and I adore the collaboration in this shot:

I used natural light at dusk, just before sunset with the natural light pouring in through a westward facing window. Although they were doing their own thing, the only modification I made to their room was to move the desk (that my big girl calls her make-up table – yeah, I know, I’m so in trouble with that one!) – I moved it away from the wall, as it usually sits just under the window. I moved it a few feet into the room so I could situate myself between the window and the desk. I sat on the floor and scooched down so I was just a tad under their eye level. I knew they’d be looking slightly downward into the mirror, so if I had shot from above (as in standing), I really wouldn’t see their eyes at all.

It’s funny to think of all the times they’ve been in the bathroom with me as I’ve been putting on my make-up. I had no idea they were studying!

Thanks for stopping by and have a joyful, creative, blessing filled day!
