Dreamy // Sleepy Baby Leo {Photo Challenge}

I love photographing families, and usually have the opportunity to work with lots of parents and kids. But rarely do I get the opportunity to photograph a newborn baby! Lucky for me, I had the perfect opportunity to photograph cutie pie Baby Leo recently. I was so happy that he slept* throughout our session! Talk about a “dreamy” baby and sweet images! You might remember his gorgeous mama, handsome daddy and adorable sister from our maternity session in August – check it out here!

So how did we get the baby to sleep the whole time? It was MAGIC! Just kidding 🙂

*PHOTO TIP: Want sleeping newborn photos? keep baby awake for 1.5 hrs before session + keep room warm ~80° for baby. You’ll be sweating bullets, but baby will sleep like a champ! {CLICK TO TWEET!}

Sisters Through and Through {CY365}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Sisters holding hands, photos in front of yellow and cream barn doors

I’ve shared lots about my daughters, and I just have to share these shots from earlier in the year. I had an assignment due for my Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at Capture Your 365 (#CY365) The assignment was experimenting with custom temperature settings on your camera. Haven’t done it? Yeah, I hadn’t either! Definitely explore that capability. I am still in awe!

{Side Note: The Practice! Class runs for a full year and we still have 4 months left. If you’re looking to make practicing your photography a priority and are looking for a class, this is IT! There’s even a mid-year discount on it. Check it out!}

After a very busy few weeks, I had to squeeze in my Practice assignment at the very last minute. Luckily, we were headed to the Girl Scout store in order to get my 7 yr olds Brownie uniform in preparation of her bridging from Daisy to Brownie, and were conveniently down the street from Balboa Park.

During the class webinar and live critique, a fellow photographer (and friend) commented on the barn doors in the shot. They are quite lovely, aren’t they?! But truth be told, they’re actually the doors to the carousel in the park. The carousel doesn’t run often, I think it’s only on weekends, but I’m not sure if the summer schedule is any different? But I digress… back to me and my photos and offering you some tips 🙂

The reason I mention the doors is because over the years, I think I’ve honed my skill of noticing backgrounds, textures and locations to use for photography. Do you take the time to notice what’s right in front of you and easily accessible? So much beauty that isn’t necessarily seen as beautiful from the get-go. {Click on the photos below to link to the original blog posts featuring that specific image and more!}

Nighttime // Seaport Village {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Seaport Village San Diego nighttime photography

The year-long “Practice” photography class I’m taking with Katrina Kennedy over at Capture Your 365 challenges me every month by being behind the lens with intention. Last month, the subject was Landscape photography and I realized that as much as I love landscapes, I just don’t do many of them. Nowadays, seems I direct my lens at people much more often than scenery 🙂

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Seaport Village San Diego nighttime photography

So I headed out to Seaport Village, a tourist spot on the harbor near downtown San Diego. I once owned a retail clothing store there, so it’s definitely my old stomping grounds!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Seaport Village San Diego nighttime photography

Maybe it’s because I expect more from myself, but I was really challenged with the landscape exercise, but probably more so because I arrived so late!

PHOTO TIP: Heading out for nighttime photography? Be sure to bring along a handy tripod, even an inexpensive one, for slow shutter speed, letting in plenty of light!

Do you photograph with intention? Being in “Practice” keeps me shooting intentionally and growing as a photographer. There is now mid-year pricing on the class. Check it out!

10 on 10 – September // First Birthday!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // First birthday cake smash, cupcake, fish, wavesMy cutie pie nephew turned one last month! You might remember him as I’ve shared about him here/his birth, here/newborn session, here/playtime and here/with my girls. I can’t believe how incredibly fast the year has gone by!

He’s beyond adorable, and I love that he and my girls just love each other to pieces! He’s getting to that fun age where he actually interacts with his cousins and they are having so much fun playing together. I know they’ll make lifelong memories together as they grow up and I can’t wait to see the boy (and eventually the man) he becomes!

His reaction to the new treat – the cupcake, the sugar, the yumminess – was awesome! Just check out his reaction…

Adventures of a new Soccer Mom

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccerI honestly never thought I’d have the title of “Soccer Mom” but I do indeed! Both of my girls started soccer this season for the first time ever. Their first games were this past Saturday and both my girls did fantastic!

My 5-year old baby is on the “Mighty Mermaids” and I have to say all these little girls are just so adorable! They played their hearts out in some pretty high heat. They did amazing, scoring several goals and getting a great feel for the game.

Part of the first weekend of games includes “Opening Day” – including team photos, food booths, soccer gear and accessories vendors, games, and overall family fun. Oh, and a team banner competition!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccerConnie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer

Yes, yours truly made the “Mighty Mermaids” banner! When I heard a “banner” was needed for the team, I honestly envisioned the type of banners I make, like the ones here, here or here. So I offered to help out. Shocked is putting it mildly when I found out it would be a 5′ by 3′ banner, and either vinyl or felt. Say wha…? I was thinking cute paper!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Adventures in soccer

So after a little coaching from a seasoned-soccer-banner-making-mom on my 7-year olds team, I headed to Joann’s for fabric (felt), fabric glue, and puffy paint, then headed to Home Depot for PVC and rebar. It took a couple of fairly dedicated days to get it done, but I love the way it came out and we won 2nd place! Woot woot!

So there you have it… the start of my adventures as a (new) soccer mom 🙂 We made a deal with the girls to commit to the full season, but we’ll see where we go from here! One game down and a full season to go… Wish us luck!

Photo Tip: If you’re planning to photograph kid sports, be sure to use a telephoto / zoom lens. You’ll get greater variety in your photos, from wide shots getting all the action, to close ups zeroing on their cute faces! I used Canon 60D with Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 for these soccer shots!

Adventure // St. Paul {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Every great Adventure begins with a single step, St Paul, France, medieval village

Remember the part of the American Pie movie where the girl (Alyson Hannigan) is always saying “One time, at band camp…”? Yeah, I sometimes feel like that when I share photos from my 2013 trip to France. But as a wife and mom with lots of day-to-day obligations, it was a pretty amazing trip! The last big trip with girlfriends before that was back in 2003 to New York, and I didn’t even have a DSLR camera back then!

So I guess I’ll just have to embrace the catchphrase…

One time, in France… my friends and I had the most exquisite private tour of a few of the villages along the South of France. Our adventure included a tour of the South of France, including Nice, Monaco, Ese Village and more. One of the villages (photographed above), St. Paul de Vence – had fantastic shopping, food, architecture and views. You can find out more about the village here or even better, you can find our entertaining and knowledgeable tour guide Katherine Coppex here. I can’t wait to share these experiences with my daughters when they’re a tad bit older!

Photo Tip: While traveling, go beyond photos of local tourist attractions – get yourself in the shots too! Get a phone selfie, a camera selfie or ask a travel companion to take the photo with you in it! You’ll be glad you did, especially years later when perusing those images! {Click to Tweet}
