Silhouette // Balloons at the Beach {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Beach Silhouette, sisters, daughters, girls, kids, beach, sunset, jump, balloons, Pacific Ocean, La Jolla ShoresAfter reading the prompt and posting my first “Coastline Silhouettes” response to the Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge: Silhouette, I was inspired and knew I wanted to go out and play some more!

My original post included tips to improve your silhouettes, so if you didn’t already read them, check them out over here.

I invited a dear friend to meet up with my daughters and I for these shots. She and I met in 2010, when I started my formal photography education, and she’s one of my go-to-gals for bouncing ideas (concepts!), discussing photo challenges (help!), and sharing good laughs and support in our photo journeys ❤

We had a blast and look forward to heading out again for another fun photo outing!

10 on 10 – August // Maternity… soon to be 4

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Maternity session, baby bump, Balboa Park, family of three growing to four, pregnancy, big sister, baby, coupleI had the fabulous pleasure of photographing this beautiful family for a maternity session as they prepare to welcome their new bundle of joy! We had a blast capturing this special time in their lives. It’s amazing to think back, to when your tummy is growing and you’re feeling the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy, it goes so slowly. Yet, once the baby is out, we realize what a rare and special time it is to be pregnant. I’m overjoyed to be able to capture this brief window in time for such a special family 🙂

Beachy Texture and a GIVEAWAY!!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // rustic, worn, beach, pier, woodIt’s Friday, which means the Daily Post came out with a new photo challenge for the week: Texture! Lucky for me, I grabbed these shots earlier this summer while my hubby, daughters and I headed to the beach for a sunset walk. There’s an old… wait, before I tell you about what’s in the shot, I have to give you some backstory…

Years ago, I knew the kinds of images I wanted to capture – images just like these – I could see them in my mind, but I didn’t know how to get them. Have you been there? Have you envisioned a specific image, but aren’t quite sure how to capture it? Well, I’m going to share with you two aspects that have been monumental in my development as a photographer…

1. Knowledge is POWER! If you’ve read a blog post or two (or a hundred) here at Clicky Chick Creates, then you know I’m an education junkie. When I am passionate about a subject, I want to learn all there is about it. And that has definitely remained steadfast in my evolution as a photographer.

The first thing that rocked my world behind the lens: learning to shoot in manual mode. Taking the power of the camera, developing your eye and shooting with intention? Absolute recipe for success!

2. Shooting with INTENTION… that’s right, I said it again! But I don’t mean “oh, I want to photograph a yellow rose!” I mean looking at our everyday environments, whether we’re at home, work, school, running errands, running for exercise, or running away for a vacation, looking around and enjoying the little details. It’s the beauty in those details, those everyday bits and pieces of our days, that beckon to be photographed.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // rustic, worn, beach, pier, wood

Being part of Katrina Kennedy’s Capture Your 365 community and “Practice!” class has been a beautiful daily reminder to be thoughtful in the everyday surroundings, wherever I may be, and has without a doubt elevated my everyday intentional shooting. That’s why I’m honored and excited to announce another giveaway…

But first imagine… Imagine you’re able to take more control of your camera, harness the power in that DSLR and get the shots you want! Well, you’re in luck!

Your Life Captured Through the Lens GIVEAWAY!!

I’m so excited to giveaway a seat in Katrina’s upcoming “Your Life Captured Through the Lens” class to one lucky reader! For an opportunity to win a seat, just leave a comment telling me what you’re most excited to photograph in manual mode! And if you want a second entry to win a seat, sign up for the Clicky Chick Creates email list. {If you’ve already opted-in, you’ll automatically get an extra chance to win!}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // rustic, worn, beach, pier, woodSo what did I photograph? What are those images of? An old fence? A piece of a bench? A favorite restaurant? It’s the Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, San Diego, California 🙂 It’s old, worn, rickety and quite lovely ❤ And the green in the background? The Pacific Ocean underneath the pier!

10 on 10 – July // Street Photography

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // street signs, red, stop, blue sky, Little Italy

We just finished tackling the most challenging exercises I’ve been faced with in the Practice class with Katrina Kennedy at CY365… Street Photography! I love photographing at farmer’s market’s and street fairs, so I thought the four exercises in Street Photography would be a breeze. Boy, was I wrong!

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // street signs, red, pedestrians, one-way, do not enter, Little Italy Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // street signs, words on pavement, confusing, arrows, Little Italy

As challenging (in a good way, of course!) as the assignments were, I definitely enjoyed pushing beyond my comfort zone. I really hoped to nail the street portrait and was channeling my “Humans of New York” inspiration as much as possible, but let’s just say I’ll leave that niche of photography to the street photography pros like Brandon Stanton 🙂

Do you enjoy street photography? Any tips you’d like to share that help you when capturing a good street portrait? I learned lots and would like to share my takeaway from the pedi-cab shots…

Relic // Louvre Art {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the LouvreHave you ever been to the Louvre in Paris? The treasures and inspiration there can be overwhelming! I’ve been there several times and still haven’t seen all there is to see. I think I could be there for a week straight and not see it all.

On this particular day, I was inspired and in awe of all the wings and textures and photographed a few…

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the Louvre Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the Louvre Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the Louvre Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the Louvre Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the Louvre Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Art from the Louvre

While walking through the museum, heading down the stairs from one world of inspiration to the next, I was struck by the glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of restoring found treasures for display in the museum. How amazing would it be to work on these relics and bring them to the world to view? Aww, the dream lives of archeologists and art conservationists…

What’s for Breakfast? {Photo Tip}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // breakfast with berries, yogurt, granola, honeyIt’s summertime, well really, it’s kind of a perpetual summer in San Diego, but I digress… It’s summertime and it’s a great time to enjoy the flavors of the season, but more importantly the time with my girls. No crazy rush-rush-get-out-the-door schedules to adhere to, so it’s a perfect time to linger in the kitchen prepping breakfast with a little extra love.

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // breakfast with berries, yogurt, granola, honey Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // breakfast with berries, yogurt, granola, honey

Our breakfast parfaits include layers of: Greek yogurt, honey, fresh cut berries, granola, and repeat the layers again!

Photo Tip: When photographing food, be sure to get nice and close (as close as your lens will focus), like you’re about to take a bite through your lens!

What changes about your meals or your schedule in general over summer? I’d love to hear, so let me know in the comments!

And I should point out the elephant in the room, right? The blog redesign? I’ve been wanting to change things up a bit on the blog and when I saw this new theme “Pictorico”, my heart skipped a beat and I knew I just had to give it a whirl! Whatcha think? Hopefully you like it! I’ll be making some tweaks along the way, so if you have some suggestions, I’d love to hear ’em!

As always, thanks for stopping by. Have a joyful, creative, blessing filled day! And if you haven’t signed-up for the Clicky Chick Creates email list yet, whatcha waiting for? You’ll get “7 Must-Have Kid Birthday Photos” printable photo tips as my thank you 🙂  {Password is sent to you via email when you sign up for the email list.}
