Intricate // Macro Details {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // macro photograph of petal layers of pink rose

I’m squeaking in at the 11th hour with my submission to the Daily Post photo challenge this week. The theme is “Intricate” and these recent photos are totally in my mind with the amazing details that get overlooked so very often.

Have you ever looked closely at the details on the petals of a rose? Or the wick of a candle? Sometimes, it’s just the little things that fascinate!

I truly love when my girls notice the world around them and proudly point out their discovery to me. Maybe it’s the photographer in me, but it’s definitely the mama in me, that smiles ear-to-ear, happy and proud that my girls are observant and appreciative of the world around them! My 5-year old had to stop us dead in our tracks while we visited the San Diego Zoo with our sweet friends Lynnette and Gracie, when she noticed this beautiful heart shaped leaf. It was high above us, but somehow she noticed it and I love that she made us pause to take in it’s beauty.

What tiny details have you noticed lately? Are you documenting it? The daily prompts at Capture Your 365 are fantastic to help get you into the routine of noticing and photographing the details around you. If you haven’t checked it out yet, and you love photography, be sure to click here to take a look. Wall // She’s Tough {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // child kid photography, locations, unexpected, wall

My community is really quite lovely. It’s in San Diego, California, and it’s a suburb with a “country living” vibe. It’s a great community, and even though it’s rather large (we have 4 public elementary schools, with about 600 – 800 in each school!), it has a very close, small town feel. Sometimes friends refer to it as living in the bubble. Some call it Mayberry. It’s easy to stay in our neighborhood for weeks on end and suddenly realize you’ve been in the bubble a little too long!

There are times when a photo vision comes to mind. Sometimes inspiration hits for a very specific look, with a distinct feel. That’s exactly what happened, but finding an urban vibe in the bubble can be a bit challenging! So while my little one and I were at one of our many local parks, I noticed the texture on this wall. I knew I had to incorporate it into my shot and fulfill my urban vision!

Getting out of the bubble just isn’t in the cards sometimes with school schedules, volunteer commitments, work obligations, playdates, family, etc., so making do with what we have around us is essential. Last weekend I taught my first live online photography class: “Location, location, location!” It was such a blast! I’m on the Creative Team at Capture Your 365 and we were celebrating our 4th birthday with a day full of live photography lessons, photo critiques, photo scavenger hunt, and more! We had lots to celebrate and an online web room full of photographers of all levels from around the world to celebrate with! Can you imagine the all the daily photo prompts that have gone into 4 years? Pretty amazing, and still going strong!

My “location, location, location” segment was wonderfully received, so I’m now working on turning it into an e-book. Pretty exciting stuff and more to come on that subject soon!

One of the examples I shared was the photo of my baby girl in all her toughness (and cuteness!) against the wall. Want to know a secret? That wall? It’s the wall of the bathrooms at the park! Yes, that gritty, urban wall… the entrance to the park bathroom! In my e-book, I’ll share my tips and tricks on spotting locations that you wouldn’t necessarily think to use for backgrounds in your photos, transporting your viewer to a destination other than reality, incorporating surroundings in unexpected ways!

10 on 10 – April // Engagement at Mercado with Rey & Gina

I had the amazing privilege to photograph this gorgeous couple for their engagement session, not once, but twice! We actually broke their session into two sessions – you might remember this post from last week of our sunset beach session? For our first session, we actually headed to a Mercado to get some local flavor and colors in Baja California.

And did I mention the best part? Those cutie pie-love birds are my family! My handsome and smart brother Rey and his adorable and creative fiancé Gina are getting married towards the end of the year, and we are so excited for the big event!

Gina and I have been pinning ideas and texting back and forth with inspiration for this session, and when she went exploring her new neighborhood, found these adorable areas for us to incorporate during our session. We did a morning session at the local Mercado and had a blast! There were so many amazing little spots we found during our outing, we could’ve went on photographing for days!! The colors, the textures, the vibe – we loved it all!

Today just happens to be our 10 on 10 posting for the month, so what a great opportunity to share Rey & Gina’s engagement session! You may have come to me from Kathleen Ries as part of the 10 on 10 circle, and even if you didn’t, follow the circle and head on over to Kristina Rust – her images are always gorgeous and inspiring, and her blog is full of great photo tips!

Abandoned // Tea for One {Photo Challenge}

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // abandoned tea pot

My girls love playing with all things girly – dolls, Barbie, Monster High ghouls, fairies, Disney princesses, make-up, spa, tea sets, etc. A couple of weeks ago they decided to take their tea set full of water and play with dirt. You guessed it… making mud pies. Yum! Being totally distracted with the mess made, I hadn’t noticed the tea pot was left behind. When I read the prompt “Abandoned” I decided to see what the girls might have left behind in the yard, because honestly, there’s always something left behind, and that’s when I noticed the teapot and the the little guest who decided to visit (on the handle).

As always, the Daily Post weekly photo challenge: Abandoned made me think about the theme. Seeing abandoned toys makes me wonder if the child who once played with it misses it? What about abandoned activities? Those incomplete projects we once started with good intentions but never circled back to? What about abandoned buildings? I’ll admit, I’m too much of a scaredy cat to go in them, although the images captured in some of those spaces are amazing! Have you checked out Leanne Cole Photography or Broken Light Collective? They have very artistic ways of capturing the emotions and depths of abandoned spaces. Not my forte, but I definitely have an appreciation for them!

Check out other “Abandoned” entries here. And you can see my other photo challenge entries here.

Holiday Cheer

Connie Hanks Photography // ClickyChickCreates.com // Baileys and coffee with a touch of whipped cream, roaring fire, bokeh, Kim Klassen "be still" texture

My family and I enjoyed some yummy treats while decorating our Christmas tree. Hot cocoa for my girls, Baileys and coffee for hubby and I. Actually, my hubby had Baileys and coffee, minus the coffee, add ice : ) Years ago (about 20!), hubby and I started the tradition of enjoying Baileys with a roaring fire and a Christmas movie – It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, The Nativity, Christmas Vacation, Elf, A Christmas Story, The Grinch… the list goes on and on. We try to do it several times throughout the season; some years it’s more frequent than others, as in we have to buy a second bottle that year! It’s one of those relaxing holiday indulgences we love and I’m so glad we’ve continued it every year. What are some of your relaxing traditions during the craziness of the holidays? I’d love to hear!

Cheers, my friends! Hope you’re enjoying the Christmas season! As always, thanks for stopping by. Have a joyful, creative, blessing filled day!

PS. Craving one now? Just mix one part Baileys to three parts coffee. Top with a bit of whipped cream. Enjoy!
